It’s finally springtime in Albany!

I just finished the first draft of the Literature Review section of my thesis!
“ Me: I’m going to have chili cheese tots and beer. Lauren: And you get to be the big spoon. ”
Around 5:00 I mentioned to Lauren that, and I quote, “I think I’m going to want cupcakes later tonight.” This is what I ended up with! Between my mother-in-law and my wife, I am a very, very happy dork (red velvet Star Wars cakes).
Lauren: The instructions say 'Chop with meat cleaver.'
Me: We don't have a meat cleaver. Just use one of the old knives.
Lauren: What if we tape an old knife to a hammer?
Thirty-year-old me has a quick message for twelve-year-old me: Yes, you can actually get sick from eating half a tube of cookie dough in one sitting.
Lauren: Do you want some real dinner that isn't cheese?
Me: Do you want to make popcorn?
Lauren: Kinda.
Amazing work.
→ The Great Gatsby - The Video Game
Now in super low-fi 2-D!!!! For all of my literary friends out there (who also have fond memories of the NES), enjoy.
It is important to note that I have downloaded and used The Daily, despite my misgivings about the publisher. I am interested in new and unique ways to read, and The Daily is getting a lot of press. I’ve been reading The Daily for a few days now, while in contrast I have been an avid user of Flipboard for quite some time. The verbs here are important, and truly at the heart of why Flipboard, in my opinion, is the better app.
The Daily is inherently a magazine, updated daily by reporters and videocasters working on a 24 hour cycle. Each morning, there is a new issue available for the low price of $0.99 per week. One dollar a week for a magazine? Amazing. Video content augmenting written stories? Superb. Reasonably fast download times and an easy-to-use-without-instructions interface? Check. On those merits alone The Daily will captivate a large audience. It is, however, supremely limited by the 24 hour cycle on which they operate, and the fact that I am still, simply, an end user. I am unable to choose the content that I receive. I am doing what I’ve always done, except this time it’s on the iPad. I’m just reading/watching/listening, doing what Americans do best - consume.
This brings us to Flipboard. Flipboard provides the content I want, from the publishers I respect, updated as soon as the story is uploaded to their site. And all for free. Now I have complete control over what I see. I can interact, since I am allowed to comment directly back to the site from where the article was served. Interactive media, in a palatable format. Here, I am a user of news and content, not merely a reader. To me, that’s an instant win. It’s news that is evolving every time I open the reader. I don’t have to wait until tomorrow if there’s nothing I want to read right now. All I have to do is check back in fifteen minutes. Fifteen minutes!! And that is something The Daily is going to have to compete with sooner or later.
The biggest problem with Blazing Saddles: having “Camp-town Ladies” stuck in your head for two days.
